World Map Without Distortion
World Map Without Distortion. Some were made for specific purposes, while others just tried to find the cartographic sweet spot. The Mercator makes Southern Europe look a little small and Scandanavia look a little big and a bit too pointy, but it does a pretty good job.
For that reason, the map does not extend to the north and south poles. On Mercator's map, Greenland and South America appear nearly the same size, but South America is actually eight times larger. Without any cut, the map's Goldberg-Gott distortion score blows all other maps currently in use out of the water, the team reports in a draft study.
These special projections represent trade offs: while most projections have minimal distortion in one area but distort heavily as you move away from that area, compromise projections distort a moderate amount everywhere.
Mercator was created for sea navigation and preserves rhumb lines allowing pilots to move away from relying on windrose networks.
Although, it's still not perfect, because the Pacific Ocean is cut between Japan and California, making it look far wider than it really is. You may be surprised at what you find! This map is favored by National Geographic because, when compared to other small-scale maps, there is less distortion.
